Yorkshire Centre Daffodil
Run

Easter Sunday, April 8th
2007
There were 54 entries for this event – a
great turn out. It had Carol and David counting their route booklets very
carefully, but they were efficient as ever and had managed to find new roads
to familiar villages and landmarks. We drove past wooded hills, banks of
daffodils and masses of primroses, all at their best in the spring sunshine.

The first spectacular view was coming
down off the northern slopes of the Howardian Hills. We could see for miles
across the valley, with Ampleforth sunlit under the steep edge of Sproxton
Moor.
Favourite villages to stop and wander
were Hovingham, Easingwold and Helmsley, our lunch stop. Helmsley was packed
with visitors and there was no where to park until a traffic warden arrived
and caused a mass exodus! The picnickers did better when they found a
farmer’s field.
The weather, and no doubt global warming,
made the ground very dry but David still managed to find a ford at Cadell
Mill in the valley below Old Byland. To be fair, he also provided an
alternative route for those who don’t like getting their wheels wet!
The MGs eventually parked up at the
Sidings Restaurant where the oldest car on parade was the 1953 MG TD MK II
of the North Natter leader Mike Payne.

In the Pride of Ownership,
Third Place
went to Eric Batchelor’s Austin Healey 3000. It is a classic car in every
sense, with its traditional pale blue and cream finish in beautiful
condition.
Second Place
went to the 1960 MGA of Bill and Janet Sharp, from Lincoln shire – a car in
first class condition and one of the most pleasing designs of the 50s and
60s.
First Place
went to the earlier MGA of Derek and Christine Tucker – The car is an
immaculate 1957 model and although the MGA is frequently used, the interior
is kept in superb condition with the fawn upholstery complementing the dark
blue bodywork.

Thanks to Carol and David for an
excellent route which had many of us reminiscing about family visits and
promising ourselves we’d go back and explore places we’d almost forgotten.
Above all, it was a good day for meeting MG enthusiasts, talking about cars
and helping Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Thank you everyone.
